The story:
In 2021, I solo-camped for a week at Cayo Costa State Park, a mostly undeveloped island off Florida’s Gulf Coast that’s only accessible by boat. It is wild and stunning. Each hiking trail through the center of the island ends at a small secret beach. That’s where I found the tree in the image above. This live oak, now dead, still hanging on to the shoreline and every one of its tiniest branches, felt forever frozen in time.
Eighteen months later, Hurricane Ian made landfall at that exact spot, devastating the park, the rest of Lee County, and beyond. It was weird to see the name of this hidden gem suddenly all over the news. Today it is still closed for rebuilding, and I suspect the tree is gone—a casualty of another record-breaking storm, supercharged by climate change.
